Seconded to the DA’s office, Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates a small case of embezzlement in the northeast kingdom of Vermont. It’s a pleasant distraction and a chance to catch up with old friends. But when a house fire turns out to be arson, with murder added to the mix, Gunther can’t help but investigate. Suddenly he finds himself caught in a web of hostility between spoilt townspeople, the state police, angry parents and members of a reclusive sect. One murder follows another, but no one seems to tell Gunther the whole truth – not even his childhood friends – and the truth is what he desperately needs to stop the killings.
