John Letherton had led a singularly uneventful life, but he never ceased to have that happy feeling that Adventure was just round the corner. When one summer morning he set off for a walking tour in North Wales he had his special feeling more strongly than, ever. And this time he was right. When he sought accommodation for the night at a wayside inn called the White Lion, the landlord was so reluctant to give him a room, and the other guests were so sinister, that he at once scented a mystery ; and mystery indeed there was, linked up with a sensational double murder.
