Rita has worked for the New York detective agency Ortner and Lloyd Investigations for seven years (Malcolm Ortner will retire when Rita quits, and Lloyd is dead) and longs to do more than shadow cheating spouses – the biggest part of her business. She thinks it’s time to make partner in the firm or get a new job. Millionaire Bobby Wilcox shows up and offers her a chance to do something different. His stepsister, Lucy Randle, and her boyfriend, Rudi Jordan, have disappeared. Since Lucy’s disappearance could have repercussions for his trust fund, Bobby, tired of working at Muse, a poetry magazine funded by his grandfather’s foundation, hires Rita to find them. The divorced detective follows a trail through the various neighbourhoods of the city that leads to a drug deal, an unusual porn business, a government bond scam and finally a murder.
