This is the story of one man’s private search for truth and justice, based on fact and colliding with the larger events. Bourke Rold comes to Pueblo in ’79 and sets out for Canon City to find out how his brother Frank really died (supposedly he drowned, but he was a good swimmer). When his old superior, General William Palmer, the president of the D&RG, visits the city in his private car, Bourke makes a courtesy call on the city and learns that he was hired to keep tabs on one of the contractors who sold out to the other side before signing his current contract. It turns out that the contractor, Tom Kimbrell, has a suspicious interest in buying out the freight company that Frank was co-owner of, and that the doctor who examined his body died unexpectedly just two days before Rold comes to town. Coincidence, or did someone want to make sure he didn’t talk?
