Four occupants of a van loaded with glass panes speed down the wrong side of a deserted highway and are blown to pieces when they collide with a huge flatbed truck. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Feiffer can initially find neither an explanation for the accident nor a connection between the victims, all ordinary middle-aged people; the mystery only increases when a bullet is found in the driver’s skull. As Feiffer’s investigation progresses, two police officers try to catch a dog stealing Chinese herbs from a drugstore, while Chief Inspector Christopher Kwan O’Yee takes calls at the station from a young boy who claims he has a Luger in his knapsack.
